1. One pack had a popped seal. This pack was not tampered with, but the seal gave way. Popped seal packs are not uncommon pre-1990. The seal was compromised on one pack, so we returned it.
2. The second pack's seal was suspect. We did not feel comfortable with the pack, so we rejected it. In no way does one pack jeopardize the integrity of 34 pristine packs and one untampered pack with a popped seal. If anything, it causes us to take even more time with the remaining packs and reject anything remotely suspect.
The owner of the box added two PSA 8 graded 1986/87 Fleer packs to complete the box. We informed the owner that due to the sticker collation and the fact that he added sealed/authentic packs from different sources to this 1986-87 box, it would be deemed a "1986/87 Fleer 36 pack box". This means that this wax box does not contain the exact 36 packs issued by Fleer for this particular box. With this in mind, the box will not have a typical factory collation.
For the past 30+ years, we have bought, sold, and authenticated countless packs/boxes of 1986/87 Fleer basketball. We stand by our decision and are confident that this box is 100% authentic.
We were notified that WhatNot opened the box of 86/87 Fleer basketball, and a video was posted from the live break. We were told that the collation was completely off, and there was a pack with 4 Magic Johnsons in it. This immediately struck us as very odd, so we watched the video. First, there wasn't a pack with 4 Magic Johnsons in it (There were four Johnsons, just four different Johnsons). We then wrote down all the cards pulled in the exact order they came out of the packs. We looked over the results and immediately realized that the collation was not ordinary. However, we did notice a familiar pattern of the 1986 Fleer collation (we will explain that below). We immediately began to investigate this strange collation. However, not once did we question our decision to authenticate this box.
As our investigation began, we noticed a video of 6 of the packs being opened online. We needed to see more! We simply were not informed enough to make official statements. We did not want to rush to an official explanation or opinion just because others were rushing to judgment. We contacted Whatnot and got a video of all 36 packs. We received the complete video yesterday with all 36 packs. As 1986/87 Fleer enthusiasts, what we have learned is exciting and should add more data and understanding to the most significant modern basketball set of our time! We want all collectors, from the novice to the advanced, to understand the attributes of the 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Pack collation. So here we go.
1986/87 Fleer Card Sequence
Let me first explain how the 1986/87 Fleer basketball collation runs within the packs. To do that, we must first look at the 1986/87 Fleer uncut sheets. There is a total of (2) different types of 86/87 Fleer uncut sheets. For understanding, we will label them as Sheets A & B.
Each of these sheets contains a complete set of 86/87 Fleer basketball cards. "Sheet A" starts (top left) with #1 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and runs in order numerically. This also means that "Sheet A" runs in alphabetical order as the cards in the 86/87 Fleer set are numbered alphabetically by the last name.
"Sheet B" is different from "Sheet A" as it starts (top left) with #67 Jeff Malone and runs in numeric order to the #132 checklist. It then continues on the seventh row at #1 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and runs to the #66 Maurice Lucas (bottom right).
If you were to cut Sheet B horizontally from the left edge to the right edge immediately after the 6th horizontal row and then put the bottom half piece on top of the top part, you would again have the same configuration as Sheet A. This is of utmost importance to know as you will notice that while the two sheets are different, all cards #1-#132 remain in the same vertical row. If a card is on the left edge on Sheet A, it will be on the left edge on Sheet B. The only difference is that the card will either be six rows higher or six rows lower, but they will always stay in the same vertical row as long as the uncut sheets stand in the same direction. For example, checklist #132 is RE-6 (Right Edge- row 6) on "Sheet B" and is RE-12 on Sheet A.
1986/87 Fleer Basketball Wax Box contains 36 packs with 12 base set cards and one sticker. So, each 1986/87 Fleer basketball wax box contains 432 base set cards and 36 stickers. With those numbers in mind, each wax box will consist of 3.27 uncut sheets. That means in a factory assimilated 1986/87 Fleer Basketball wax box; you should get at least (3) of each card and a 4th card of 36 cards in the set. These 36 extra cards from a 4th sheet equate to roughly 27% of that 4th sheet. That begs the question, what did they do with the remaining cards on the 4th sheet? While 1986-87 Fleer basketball had pretty consistent sequencing, with this 4th sheet in play, there is still a chance for a surprise as at least 8% (36 cards) of the total wax box are random and unpredictable.
Typical Pack Sequencing
86/87 Fleer wax packs are in reverse alphabetical order (Z to A) in two separate parallel sequences separated by 66. For example, #125, #59, #124, #58, #123, #57, #122, #56, #121, #55, #120, #54. As you can see, the two groups of numbers are in reverse alphabetical order, intertwined within each other, separated by 66. This order is what we call Typical Pack Sequencing. According to our data, this pack sequencing occurs in about 50-60% of all unopened 86/87 Fleer Basketball Packs. This percentage would be much higher if it were not for the flip card.
Understanding the Flip Card
For 86/87 Fleer basketball enthusiasts, the "flip card" is something that has puzzled collectors since the release of the product. A "flip card" is a card that is flipped upside down in the pack and interrupts the "Typical Pack Sequencing" flow by jumping to a new set of numbers. Usually, when this flip and jump occurs, the pack falls back into typical pack sequencing. However, seeing atypical sequences before or after the flip card is not unusual. We will give examples of these atypical sequences below. To understand the mystery of the flip card, we must again look at the uncut 86/87 fleer sheets.
As you examine the uncut sheets, you will see in both A&B sheets that there are (11) rows across and (12) high. Again, (12) base cards are in (1) 86/87 Fleer basketball pack. The "flip" occurs because the pack sequence hits the end edge of a row on the sheet (because there are 12 cards in a pack, but the rows of the uncut sheets are only 11 cards long). Herein is where randomness and instances of atypical sequencing occur.
What drives 86/87 Fleer enthusiasts nuts is that we cannot predict what flip card and new number sequence will show up. However, when a factory assimilated wax box is opened, an imprecise pattern can form from that unique box. Why are these flip card patterns ambiguous? Glad you asked! To predict the flip card, you must know the following:
1. In what order is the sheet cut at the factory?
2. Is each sheet cut one at a time?
3. Are two sheets cut at one time and then sorted?
4. Are two sheets cut at one time with one sheet inverted? A card sequence must invert if there is a flip card. (Go ahead and stare at those sheets!)
5. Are both sheets A & B used in one box? If so, which sheet is 1&3, and which one is 2&4?
6. Do they cut each horizontal row one row at a time and then sort? Two---then sort. Four? You get the idea.
7. Do they cut the edge rows vertically? Particularly the right edge of the sheet? (see below about the flip card)
8. How do they shuffle the cards to put them in the typical pack sequencing order?
9. How does the 4th sheet play into the sequencing and sorting? What happens to the 96 cards that remain on the 4th sheet?
10. Do they cut and sort the 1986 Fleer Basketball Set like they cut and sort the 1986 Fleer Update Baseball set (also with 132 cards and 22 (divisible by 11) stickers? If you have a 1986 Fleer Update Factory set, you may want to grab it. What you see might help your understanding depending on what variation of collation you have. You could have a factory-collated set with sequential order (also alphabetical same as the basketball set). ***We will talk more about the 1986 Fleer Update Set below.
These and many more questions must be answered to predict what numbers the flip card will jump to! Over the years, we have tried to get answers to these questions. We have attempted to contact former Fleer employees, but they simply cannot be found. We have sent Facebook messages and made cold calls to try to get understanding concerning the cutting of the 1986 Fleer Basketball Sheets at the Fleer factory but to no avail. We feel at this point that after 35+ years since the release of this set that it will remain a mystery. Understand, the idea was to print/package/and ship these cards/boxes/cases ASAP. Below is a list of possible sheet orders for cutting and assembling the uncut sheets.

According to the data, the highlighted rows above are what we feel make the most sense in a typical assembling process, but we can't be sure. What do we know for certain about the uncut sheets? At the very least, we know that cards were inverted in the assimilation of the cards into packs; thus, we have a flip card. Keep in mind when a flip card occurs that all cards underneath the flip card are oriented in the same direction as the flip card. This orientation can continue into a new pack until another "flip card" occurs. This is why the top card of the pack (opposite direction of the sticker) can be oriented in the same direction from top to bottom as the wax wrapper, or it can be inverted.
Our data supports, that the "flip card" is the most consistent pattern in 1986/87 Fleer authentic wax packs. As stated, almost all of the time, the flip card occurs because the pack sequence has reached the end of the right edge row (11th row of the sheet vertically). According to our data, 90%-97% of the time, the flip card is a card that is on the RIGHT EDGE of the sheet. In other words, the flip card is 90%+ of the time in row 11 vertically.

When a flip card does show up that is not located on the right edge of an uncut sheet (and it does happen), it is not uncommon that something atypical will occur within that particular pack. We have seen the following happen in 86/87 Fleer packs.
1. Packs can be short cards (usually missing one base card).
2. Packs can have multiple cards (usually 2-3 cards) in a numeric/alphabetical run.
3. Packs can contain multiple stickers in a pack.
4. When a flip card does show up that is not located on the right edge of an uncut sheet, the pack usually contains or is close to (usually no more than numerically 11 cards away from) number #66 Maurice Lucas. Also, notice that #66 is a RIGHT EDGE sheet card. Not only is #66 a right edge sheet card, but it is also the bottom row right edge card (RE-12) on the uncut sheet B.
All of these facts make the flip card as crucial, if not more important than the typical numeric parallel sequencing in determining the authenticity of a box. Understanding the sequence of the flip card is key to understanding that the 86/87 Fleer box that was opened by WhatNot is undoubtedly authentic!

Notice that example #3 and example #4 have a very similar pack sequence and even the same flip card (#22 Brad Davis). However, the number sequence that follows this flip is different. In example #3, the new sequence after the flip card is #110, and in example #4, the new sequence starts with #88. Thus, the new sequence that follows the flip card is somewhat random.
The four example videos above are just a few documented breaks with a flip card on the right edge. Many more examples can be found on YouTube. As stated, while the sequence of change that the flip card brings is unpredictable, the flip card is about as consistent as Larry Bird was from the free throw line (88.6% career FT shooter). According to the data accumulated over the years, we feel that when a pack has a "flip card," 85-95% of the time, the flip card will be a right-edge card from an uncut sheet.
According to our data, typical pack sequencing with a flip card occurs in roughly 45-55% of the 1986-87 Fleer basketball wax packs. This means that in an intact factory-assembled box, you should expect to have 17-20 packs with flip cards.
Atypical Pack Sequencing
As stated, while 86/87 Fleer is typically consistent in its sequencing, there are times when the pack sequencing veers slightly off course. There are at least TWO reasons for this. The first reason is that the math does not add up! There are 432 base cards in a wax box. This requires four uncut sheets to be used for printing. Four uncut sheets have a total of 528 cards, leaving 96 extra cards on the 4th sheet after it has been cut.
Why would Fleer do this? The simple answer is that in 1986, the Fleer company was just getting back into the Basketball business. The 1986 Fleer Basketball set is iconic because it's the first basketball set produced in wax pack form since the 1981-82 Topps Basketball Set. The 1986 Fleer basketball set would be Fleer's first attempt at printing basketball cards since the now iconic 1961 Fleer Basketball set. From 1981-86, Fleer mainly produced BASEBALL CARDS.
1986 Fleer Baseball Factory Sets had a total of 660 cards. Below is a picture of an opened 1986 Fleer Factory Set.
When opening the 1986 Fleer Baseball Factory Set lid, you would notice that there are (12) different columns of the 1986 Fleer base set cards (the 13th column is stickers). These (12) columns consist of (55) cards each. Thus, 55 multiplied by 12 equals 660 cards. What is interesting is that every column has a flip. Also, note that 660/132 equals 5. That's right; it takes five unique uncut sheets to print the 1986 Fleer Baseball Factory Set.
Starting in 1984, Fleer began to produce Baseball Update Sets. These sets were not found in packs but sold only in set form. These Fleer Update sets had a total of (132) cards plus stickers. In the case of the 1986 Fleer Update Factory Set, there were (132) base cards and (12) stickers. Notice in the picture of the opened lid of the 1986 Fleer Update Set, much like the 1986 Fleer Factory set that in the box, the cards are assembled in columns. There are (6) columns of (22) cards plus (1) column of stickers. The end of each column flips in the opposite orientation as the next, Not only did this set contain (132) cards, just like the 1986-87 Fleer basketball set, but it is also in numerical/alphabetical order. Notice in the picture below that the first column contains cards 1-22, orientation flips as it will with every group of (22) 23-44, 45-66, 67-88, 89-110, 111-132. Again, these (6) columns are in numeric order. If you would turn columns 1-22 face side up, card #22 would be on top and would continue in descending alphabetical/numerical order.
Another fact to point out is (see above photo) that if you "cut the deck in half" of the 1986 Fleer Update set and put them in two separate but equal stacks, card #1 and card #67 would have opposite orientations. So why does this make any difference? I'm glad you asked. We know for a FACT that 1986 Fleer Basketball and 1986 Fleer Baseball were at the very least occasionally
printed in the same factory and on the same printers. See the pictures below.
Wait, what? Yes, those are authentic 1986-87 Fleer stickers with a 1986 Fleer baseball sticker overprinted on the back of the card. Currently, these four cards are listed on eBay for $100,000 OBO. They are scarce, but we have seen more than just these (4) examples. Even some in unopened packs! Understand that many experts have agreed that over 5,000 cases of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball produced. That equates to over 60,000 wax boxes of 86/87 Fleer have been made! Instances of errors in 1986 Fleer Basketball printing sequences were much more common in the 1980s, and early 1990's when most of these boxes were opened. Nowadays, there are usually only 3-5 86/87 Fleer boxes opened in a year. Still, we find a good amount of atypical pack sequences.
These several points and exhibits give more than enough proof to understand that it is possible and even more than likely that some (minimal amount) boxes of 1986-87 Fleer Basketball could have been configured in the same way a 1986 Fleer Update baseball set was. Blocks of (22) that only flipped after the 22nd card but were shuffled together to give the 86/87 Fleer typical pack sequencing with two separate parallel sequences separated by 66.
In 1986 no one recorded themselves opening boxes of 86/87 Fleer Basketball. Why? No one cared. We couldn't give these boxes away! Some dealers would run sales at shows where if you bought (1) box of 1986 Fleer Baseball, you would get (1) box of 86/87 Fleer Basketball for FREE! As 86/87 Fleer Basketball enthusiasts our biggest wish is to have at least SOME of that data from the 59,500+ 86/87 fleer wax boxes.

That's a total of (4) packs from this one box that had atypical pack sequencing. This again shows that the 86/87 Fleer collation was not close to perfect. In this box alone, over 11% of the packs were atypical.
The next box we will examine is one of the most excellent boxes we have ever handled. This box is part of the "Sherburne, New York" Fleer basketball find from April 2017. This find consisted of 7 boxes of 86/87 Fleer basketball that were still untouched in the original case (and a 1987/88 Fleer basketball sealed wax case). These were the finest seven boxes we have come across in the last few decades. The packs themselves were NM-MT to MINT and are all in the original state as they were placed in the case by Fleer. Each stack of 9 packs in the boxes was untouched, and the stickers came in almost perfect numerical order.

Of the (36) packs opened in this box, there were precisely (18) packs with flip cards in them. That's precisely 50% of the packs had flip cards in them. Of the (18) flip cards, all but (2) were right-edge sheet cards. We will discuss the (2) packs that did not have a flip card that came from right-edge of an uncut sheet. The data collected from this box break is consistent with the information we have accumulated over the years. As stated, this was as perfect of a box as we had seen, but even then, there were atypical pack sequences.
1. Pack #2 in the break. This is the first pack with a "flipped" card that's not a right-edge sheet card. While this card is "flipped," is this card the "flip" card? The answer is no. Then why is the card flipped? Because it is supposed to be flipped. However, the pack is missing a card. There are only (11) base cards in this pack. Undoubtedly, the card that is missing is the card that comes before #46 Roy Hinson, which would have been a base card. No doubt it would have been a right-edge sheet card. If you look at the pack configuration, you will notice that there is not an 11th-row sheet card in this pack. THIS IS IMPORTANT! (we will show you more below)

2. Pack #32 in the break. This is the second pack with a "flipped" card that's not a right-edge sheet card. Again, while #94 is flipped, is this card truly the "flip" card? The answer is no. While the Tree Rollins card should be "flipped," there should have been a right edge sheet card before it and that card would have been the FLIP card in the pack. However, this pack is also missing (1) card and does not have a right-edge sheet card. If these (2) missing cards were included in the two packs, then the box would have had 100% continuity with our data.

Again, the correct flip card is of the utmost importance. As stated, we have seen genuine unopened/untampered packs with an edge card that is not a right edge sheet card, but they are the minority. They often occur because a card is missing, and other times they randomly appear. Our data indicates that 85-95% of the time, the flip card will be a right-edge card from an uncut sheet.
WhatNot Box Break
We at BBCE authenticated the "WhatNot" box and wrote the following on the letter of authenticity.
This letter is being written for the 1986/87 Fleer basketball wax box that is labeled #X0851. It is in my best opinion that this box is not the exact 36 packs issued by Fleer. It appears that the packs were taken from a few different locations to build a full box. However, the packs are 100% original. The packs are clean NM-MT to NM-MT+. We will label this box as a "36 pack box".
As earlier stated, we were able to view the video of all 36 packs of this box being opened. WhatNot shared the video of this box being opened with us. We look forward WhatNot releasing the full video so all can enjoy. Below are the pack "stats" and sequences for this box.

As stated earlier in the "Atypical Pack Sequencing" section, the (29) total atypical sequenced packs that are in this box are in numerical/alphabetical order. This can be attributed to a user error in the factory that day, most likely due to a change in the assembling of basketball sheets to baseball sheets or vice versa. (see the above sections) The other plausible explanation can be an error in the sequence or orientation of the Typical Sheet Cutting Print Sequences. In other words, the wrong order of sheets could have been cut and sorted, or sheets could have been inverted and then assembled incorrectly.
What makes this box, beyond a shadow of a doubt, authentic is the fact that the atypical packs follow the most consistent pattern of the 86/87 Fleer wax box. That is the flip card. Of the (29) total atypical sequenced packs, 96.5% (28 total)of those packs have flip cards that are right-edge sheet cards. THIS CANNOT BE A COINCIDENCE!
We've heard some say that these packs were probably made from low-grade sets and then repackaged back into packs. After watching the video of ALL (36) packs being opened, EVERY card/pack and flip sequence are centered similarly. These did not come from hand-collated sets. We are 100% confident that all of the "atypical sequenced packs" came from the same box and on the same printer. Again, we do not question the authenticity of this box.
While we can't say with 100% certainty what went awry that day at Fleer, we can tell you what DID NOT happen.
1. Someone opened all the packs.
2. Went through all the cards but did not remove any key cards.
3. Took all the cards out of the typical collation we have known for the last 36 years.
4. Re-sorted them into this new collation that resembles at least half the typical collation.
5. Made sure they got the right edge flip card right every time
6. Even after readjusting all the cards, they kept the top card, the one with the gum powder on it, and none of the others. (You will see this when WhatNot releases the video)
7. Then resealed all the packs so perfectly that we couldn't detect it.
As you can see, these packs are not “completely off” in the collation. In fact, the collation is spot-on. We have been doing this for decades now. We have seen it all. We have studied not only the packs themselves but opened the resealed ones to get a feel for the cards also. It would pretty much take the mind of a genius to reseal the pack, take the cards like this, then have them flip over in the exact same spot. Then have them pick up the same alphabetical order again, in two different packs.
In addition, we closely watched the packs being ripped open. Not only are the flaps opening the way they should on good packs, the “inner guts”, as we like to call them, are opening correctly also (These are the inner folds of the packs where they got heat/waxed together).
What we found was quite rare and amazing. Not only did we discover what happened with this box but learned a little more on how Fleer cut and packaged this landmark set.
This box is 100% untampered with and unsearched. Everyone who handled this box from the consignor, to auction, to opening the box did nothing nefarious. The box was never switched out nor tampered with after we wrapped it.
